The Testimony of Children
In June of 1985, Kelly Michaels, a teacher at the Wee Care Nursery School in New Jersey, was arrested on charges of sexual abusing 51 students in her care. The prosecutor’s evidence at trail was based primarily on the testimony of the alleged victims of the sexual abuse – 51 nursery school aged children. It was this testimony and other circumstantial evidence that resulted in her conviction of 115 counts of sexual abuse in August of 1988. ... The following year, the New Jersey State Supreme Court upheld the appellate courts decision and declared that "the interviews of the children were highly improper and utilized coercive and unduly suggestive methods. ...
