George Schuyler was born during the Harlem Renaissance in Providence, Rhode Island on February 25, 1895. His parents were Eliza Jane Fischer and George S. Schuyler. Since he was born in the north it enabled him to escape many of the worst effects of turn of the century racism. He had a respectable middle-class upbringing in a racially mixed area of Syracuse, New York where he attended public school from 1902 to 1912. His father died when he was three. His father was a hotel chef. His poorly educated stepfather was a hardworker. His family attended the Episcopal church. His prents inculcted in him a profound respect for the history of black progress following emancipation. He joined the army at 17 with out graduating. He enlisted with the UnitedStates Army in 1912 and worked his way to the rank of lieutenant.
