Fantine was so blinded by her love, that she submits herself completely to Tholomyes and allows him to get her pregnant, but then he vanishes from her life as quickly as he came, leaving her behind with a daughter that she cannot support and a shattered heart.
On her own, Fantine finds she cannot support her daughter Cosette without help, so she leaves her with the Thenardiers. Fantine believes that they will be able to give Cosette a much better life than she could provide.
