CHILD CARE PROGRAMS IN CANADA INTRODUCTION In Canada, Family life is changing dramatically. Today there are a lot more one parent homes and women have a place in the working world. Things aren’t like they used to be with single incomes; usually the man of the house bringing it in, and the women playing the role of child giver and care. Women also used to be responsible of cooking meals, house cleaning, and maintenance; involving sowing torn clothes, and making sure everything was in order. Today, things are changing so rapidly that roles are being altered and understanding of roles is unknown at times. This has increased the divorce rate, and the amount of single parent homes. Children need an influence during there growth years, if both parents are active in the work force than Child Care Programs in Canada are a good choice for reliable care and structure. Canadian Child Care programs give small communities a place where they can leave children during there days work. Child Care is essential for the children of the busy two income families these days. In this study the focus is based on the quality of Child Care programs and the quality of children that are graduates from this sort of care. This focus will come from a personal experience of what goes on at a small community Daycare, and the lessons taught there. Another necessary point that this study will relate to is the standards that the Canadian and Provincial governments have issued to getting the best out of these programs. Another insight will be the importance of Child Care in today’s working world. OAC RELIGIOUS STUDIES CHILD CARE PROGRAMS IN CANADA REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF SECONDARY RESEARCH Child Care Practitioners work with one of today’s most vulnerable groups, young children. The quality of the interactions between young children and the people that care for them has a very significant impact on children’s lives. The potential of the relationship is determined by the commitment by the child care practitioner and the standards they follow. For child care to be successful the practitioners have to accept the ethical obligation to understand and work well with children. Different topics that are practised are the family, culture and community. These are all important in installing into a young mind. Child Care practitioners care to educate the young children to the best they can be. One of the main objectives a child care practitioner understands is that the parents are the primary caregivers and value the differences between each kid. The Canadian Child Care Federation recognize that it is their responsibility to promote ethical practices and attitudes on the part of their child care practitioners. The following standards of practice are developed to help child care practitioners with their professional practice and get the most out of the program. Along with these standards to achieve the maximum production there are eight ethical principles of the code. Standard’s of Child Care come from the Canadian Child Care Federation in a series called Partners in Quality. These standards are country wide, and are to be followed by all. In the Partners in Quality Series there are four books titled Issues, Relationships, Infrastructure and Communities. There is also a Tools book for practitioners in Child Care, that has the standards of practice. A few things that need to be understood is “that a practitioner is anyone that works in the field of child care, including early childhood educators, family child care providers, family resource program personnel, resource and referral program personnel.”(CCCF 2) This entitles anyone that takes care of children to follow these standards projected from the government. Each set of standards have a different section. Section A’s focus is on the “Caring for Children.” Standard one in this section is “Protect and promote the psychological and physical safety, health and well-being of each child being cared for.”(CCCF 4) Things that are to be followed from this standard are: maintain a sanitary environment, hazard-free environment, promote children’s health which includes healthy eating, and to protect and promote children’s psychological health and well-being.
