Elisabeth Stickel COM 306 Experiment Design 11/14/03 This experiment examines the relationship between personal space and social interactions with strangers. It examines how a violation of personal space between two people, results in a change in behavior between the participants. It is hypothesized that when a stranger invades an individual's personal space, the individual will engage in avoidance behavior. Personal space is the space surrounding a person in which the person believes is a comfortable distance between him or herself and the people they are near. Avoidance behavior occurs when a person feels uncomfortable or gets nervous as they feel threatened by a certain something, in this case another person. When this happens the person may begin to stop talking to the other person, move away from the other person, make facial expressions, such as rolling their eyes or raising an eyebrow, or they may even simply state for the other person to move away from them. Thus, the independent variable in this experiment is amount of personal space and the dependent variable is the behavior in which the participant engages ink, and in this case, avoidance behavior. The type of experimental design I would use to test my hypothesis would be the post-test only experiment. This is when one group receives the experimental condition, while the other group, the control group, does not receive the experimental condition. Specifically, for this experiment, participants would be randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group. Even though I would give up a little bit of group equivalence, because there is no pre-testing involved in this experiment type, I feel that it would avoid the problem of sensitization, which in this instance would greatly affect the experiment and it's results. Also, with this experiment type, there is a comparison to be made between the two groups will further help to show how the independent variable truly affected the dependent variable. For this experiment, the two groups would believe that they are going into a designated room to have an interviewer ask them questions about their views on the War on Iraq and that the interviewer was going to record their responses for a study. The room, which is set up with two chairs across from each other with a table in between separating them will be used for both groups, to ensure the environment is the same.
