Valley Wildlands Are Under Threat of Valley Growth The largest U.S. wildlife refuge outside of Alaska resides here in Southern Nevada. The Desert National Wildlife Range is part of a four-refuge complex that is beginning to feel the burdening effects of a growing city like Las Vegas. Towards the end of 2002, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began to finalize its Comprehensive Conservation Plan, which it will use as a guide for managing the four-refuge complex in harmony between wildlife and the growing population. The problem has been the tremendous growth in the valley. Cars and trucks speed up and down the 95 freeway that lies at the southern boundary of the 1.6-million acre range.
