The first amendment guarantees us as Americans the freedom to speak our minds and say almost anything to anyone no matter how offensive. ... The first amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. They might argue that the are utilizing there first amendment right, I say that the purpose behind freedom of speech is to liberate those oppressed by the majority and give them an opportunity to better themselves. ... this should already be obvious but when the Supreme Court has to get involved with something as “simple” as speech there is a problem. ... For many years, freedom of expression/ speech was seen as the symbol of tolerance, freeing those oppressed from majority control. In recent years, this consensus has changed; many have come to regard the stance on freedom of speech as a barrier to a just and tolerant society. ...
Matsuda says that victims sacrifice there personal freedom. ... I don’t know who said this but the most important thing I hope to get across is the article is that unless we ensure to the enemies of freedom the liberties that they are keen to abuse, then we deny the essence of what we ultimately stand for and are therefore no better than those to whom we are opposed.
