The way of “understanding a culture”

One can easily name hundreds of thousands of obvious details that makes the Turkish culture different than the Western culture – that of the North Europe’s in this case. It is, however, superficial just to name these differences as representing the culture in subject without looking more into depth to its basis and reason. ... This is the same with naming the obvious differences of that culture after only having a one-week holiday in that country. ... To actually understand the reason why people ended up with those particular solutions, one must look at the past, the history, how the society and the culture evolved, how power balances changed with the time, how and to which extent the outside world influenced this culture.

Gradually, while exploring a culture into depth, one will realise that the source of these solutions, is a combination of some geographical, geo-political, ecological, anthropological etc. ...

Distinguishing the three levels of culture in this case helps better understanding of the situation. Moving on from general to specific, the levels of the culture are the stopovers. The artefacts and behaviours which are the first and most obvious level of a culture can be compared to the first impressions of a tourist when arriving in a country for the first time.
