There were many problems of living in a newly set up town in the west, In all the towns the problems included poor quality housing and lack of basic amenities, most importantly reliable supplies of fresh, clean water and a system of sewage disposal (both of which meant that there was lots of disease). ... Although the violence of the "Wild West" has been much exaggerated, new towns were often lawless places, especially as the commonest forms of entertainment were drinking and gambling. ... The most important reason for settlement of new towns in the American West was the discovery of gold in California. By the 1860s railways linked the East and the West Coast to transport industrial goods out west and agricultural produce to the far west.
