In the early United States slavery was an accepted financial business institution. The brutality and cruelty of slavery was kept behind a curtain, and was never really known by the public. In 1845 however, Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave, published a narrative of his life in enslavement. The narrative put forth by Douglass changed views of many 19th century and present day readers; making it without a doubt one of the most important slave narratives, giving an inside look at the destructive dehumanizing ‘institution’ of slavery
In Douglass’ narrative he gives a powerful portrayal of life under the Southern tyranny, and his struggle to break free.
