EDUCATION - AN INSTRUMENT OF SOCIAL CHANGE

Pakistan is passing through a critical phase of history . ... There seems to be a metamorphosis and change in the thought process of the educated class. ... This uncertainty and transition brings a message of change and provides us great opportunity of shedding away the shackles of ignorance, orthodoxy and extremism. But to achieve that lofty goal some far reaching reforms in all areas including “education” will be required. ... And this can only come through education Educational institutions in fact serve as nurseries for inculcating the right values and attitudes in children’s minds. There is only one subject matter for education, and that is “life” in all its manifestations. ... Forcing the students to cram incomprehensible data and choke them with “facts” is certainly not education. Real education starts when students apply this knowledge to master the process of investigating, what knowledge is for? ... On the contrary the US Code of Ethics for the Education Profession in its Preamble emphasizes that “the educator believing in the worth and dignity of each human being recognizes the supreme importance of the pursuit of truth, devotion to excellence and the nurture of democracy”. ... Whether this social process aims at producing “docile workers who merely obey orders or training inquiring adults capable of self —determination and creative thinking”. ... Our education system also unwittingly promotes “social stereotypes by expressing lower expectations from certain groups of students. ... Can this type of education ever contribute to ‘a social transformation or change especially when govt. ... “Special interest groups”, the fundamentalists the reactionaries and the agents of capitalists exert full pressure on the policy makers to perpetuate this system of education and the govt.
