Introduction
A certain level of Physical Fitness is of Paramount importance for any competitor who wishes to maximise their badminton performance. As (Downey, J 1995) states, you must have enough fitness to do the work that is required at the level in which you participate. Physical Fitness can be subdivided into many divisions, there are obviously several general fitness components, and within these there are specific badminton components. In order to enhance performance to its full potential the badminton participant must have good general fitness but more importantly must possess the specific components that are required for badminton. As (Jackson et al, 1999) states, general fitness is a hard term to describe, saying that if your fit you will have the stamina to perform your daily activities with energy and vigour. Fitness can be further subdivided into health – related fitness which as (Jackson et al, 1999) says is focused on areas that affect our overall health and energy and our ability to perform daily tasks and activities. Here the components will include cardio respiratory fitness, body composition, and musculoskeletal fitness. (Jackson et al, 1999) compares this health related fitness against skill-related fitness, which in this case will be skills related to badminton. ... An example of how one of these aspects relates to badminton may be aerobic capacity, here in a game situation the performer will need a good aerobic capacity to continue a high intensity and not get tired so that the technical and tactical elements of the performance are not impeded with.

In the game of Badminton as (Downey, J 1995) states there are three main abilities that the performer will have to have complete mastery over in order to realise their highest potential performance, these three aspects are:-

•     Tactical
•     Technical
•     Psychological abilities.

(Downey, J 1995) says that badminton is a very versatile game and that it makes enormous technical, tactical, physical and psychological demands. He also goes onto say that it is difficult to know which area (tactical, technical and psychological) is most important as it is impossible to measure precisely. ... As (Downey, J 1995) says, technical skill is to do with the use of strokes as tactical moves when you play building shots and attempted winning shots in accordance with the principle of attack.

(Downey, J 1995) states technical ability is to do with how you use your racket and body while playing. ... We can see that the tactical, technical, physical and psyche all affect each other. ... An example of this is the relationship between tactics and the physical condition of a competitor. ... A badminton performer that enhances their flexibility increases physical efficiency and performance. ... In order to carry out this tactic they will need to have high fitness themselves and if they didn’t, employing this tactic would not be beneficial. ...
Anaerobic Capacity Training
Anaerobic training will take place when the performer will be training at a higher tempo and the oxygen energy system can no longer be used as the demand place on your heart and lungs to get pump the blood to the skeletal muscles is too great. ... However at very high tempo situations such as a game situation it will be nearly impossible to function just in your anaerobic system as the high demand that the body will be put under will cause the skeletal muscle to demand blood at a faster rate than which the heart and lungs can manage, so it is therefore essential that we try to enhance our anaerobic capacity in order to fully utilise our performance at times in match situations.
