the stage director mustMedieval: Games and Sports When one thinks of Middle Ages, they think of shining armor, banquets, kings, and queens; however, the life of an average person included different activities then the ones mentioned above. For many people in the middle ages games, sports, and entertainment was an important part of their lives. An outdoor activity that took place during the middle ages was hunting. However, that wasn’t the only source of entertainment; in fact, card games were also played as leisure, one in particular named Piquet. Lastly, board games were most popular during the middle ages, Nine Men’s Morris and Twelve Men’s Morris. During the medieval times people didn’t have the technological advances that society has today; therefore, games such as hunting piquet, and Nine Men’s Morris were popular games played amongst the people. Hunting was the most popular sport that was played outdoors. This game was played by the knights and peasants. It took place in the forest, and that was basically known as the hunting grounds. “Knights often hunted foxes, deers, otters, badges, rabbits, wolves and boars” (Hu 1). There were variety of animals that people hunted and this was not considered a sport, but a source of food. Hunting was an activity that included both the upper class and lower class of society. In the upper class there are three different types of hunting. The first type is the huntsmen, which is hunting for food with the help 2 of at least four huntsmen. “To aid them, he employed 4 horn blowers, several assistant huntsmen, archers, dog handlers and wolf hunters”(Thomas 1). As one can see it was a difficult task to hunt wild animals; therefore, huntsmen were invariably well payed. This type of hunting required great knowledge because the animals that huntsmen hunted were wild such as: stag, boar (wild pig), bear, rabbit, hare, fox, and wolf.
