The title of Sharon Olds poem “The Race” insinuates a competitive battle with time, to reach a safe and peaceful haven. ... “The Race” starts out as a hellish nightmare, everything goes wrong, and the mood is intense and suffocating. ... Sharon Olds uses an allusion from the bible to illustrate this transition from a situation of stress to relaxation. In her poem Sharon Olds modestly raises questions about respect and love for our “fathers” both god and biological, the after life, heaven and earth and unconditional devotion. ... The panic race against time starts
Unfortunately life is not an eternal gift, and as time progresses people must leave ‘this world’ and enter into the next. In The Race the child battles with time, through a chaotic airport to meet a dying father for the last time.
Poem is very compelling to me because I could not imagine the panic she must have felt; when reality hit that she may not be able to meet her dying father for the last time
- also believe in the afterlife
- race against time
- transition in to heaven, felt safe relaxed when she was on plane
Everything appeared so heavenly do light beautiful
Getting to meet dad for last time is worth as much as going to heaven…….
