Hammurabis Code abridged

Perhaps one of the oldest texts in history, dating back from Mesopotamia, is the Code of Hammurabi. When the first civilizations were being created people needed a set of rules and laws to live by, so Hammurabi, the ruler of Babylonia from 1728 to 1686, created a code of laws to bring together his people and to govern his empire more efficiently. The code itself contained 282 sections, which dealt with many aspects and factors of life in Babylonia. ... In the epilogue to the Code, he says, “Let the oppressed, who has a case at law, come and…read the inscription, and understand my precious words. ... One of the most interesting laws of the code is the fact that the first law created was a ban on magic and sorcery because the presence of magic among the Babylonians was so great. ...
While many other legal systems during this era had facets similar to those found in the Hammurabi’s Code, none matched the sophistication and thoroughness of the Babylonian laws.
