Gwendolyn Brooks was one of the African-American authors who rose to prominence after World War II. She won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1949. Many websites feature her works, including her poem "We Real Cool," published in the 1950s. In 1966, the Broadside Press of Detroit published the poem on a poster, or broadside. It appears in American Time Capsule: Three Centuries of Broadsides. (Memory ) Ms. Brooks has turned a eight line poem into young people lives in the1950's up until the present time. In the poem she talks about how young students decided to skip school. Just imagining a group of students in a pool hall skipping school. Lurking late at night. Striking straight getting into fights. Singing sin. Using words of profanity. Ms. Brooks is portraying the life of young children. These children might have not had anyone at home to count on so they decide to go to a pool hall during school hours. We Jazz June could mean at that day in time having sex with someone name June.
