My name is Tara Lipinski. I am a famous ice skater. I am now 18 years old. When I was 15, I won the gold medal in the Olympics. I was born in 1982 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1985, when I was 3 years old, I went roller skating for the first time. My mom and I were going to see a movie that day. An advertisement caught my mom's eye. A roller skating rink down the street was giving away Care Bears, and my mom thought I would like one. So we were off to the rink, forgetting about the movie. I met a girl named Brittany there, and we became instant friends. When it came time to leave, Mom asked for the complimentary Care bear. The man at the rink told her that she had not read the advertisement carefully. She found out that you only received the Care Bear if you signed up for ten skating lessons. So Brittany and I got signed up for the lessons. A short time later, Brittany and I changed rinks in order to take "Tiny Tot" roller skating lessons. The more I learned to skate the more I wanted to learn. I did school figures, danced pairs, and speed skated. When I competed, I won more that 50 plaques, medals, and trophies for roller skating. I loved performing in front of a crowd. Janet, the mom of Amanda, who is a friend of mine, suggested that I try ice skating because she thought I would have fun doing it. My mom was not happy about letting me try ice skating, but she gave into Janet. In 1989, when I was six, I first glided out onto the ice. I was a mess! My ankles bent in, my elbows pointed out, and I kept landing on my backside. My parents and I were a little surprised that I was so awful. After all, I was a natural on roller skates. My parents wanted to go get hot chocolate. They asked if wanted to come. I said no, I wanted to keep skating. Soon I realized that my ice skates were lighter than my roller skates. That made it easier to do jumps-that is if I could figure out how to stay on my feet. I started to pay attention to the way the other skaters were skating. Forty-five minutes later, I had gotten much better. I was doing axles, waltz jumps, and skating backward.
