Distance “But there are all kinds of contradictions in life. You can’t think about the contradictions” (24). Although the main character in Raymond Carver’s short story “Distance” insists on this, it becomes apparent throughout the story that the opposite is true. The theme, that contradictions in life must not be overlooked, is most evident through symbolism and characterization. “We’re like the Canada geese, the boy said. They only marry once.” (24). This quote sets up the basis for the geese symbolism that inhabits the whole story. He tells her that their marriage is like these geese, and that they will be together always. If one dies, then the other one would never remarry, but live by itself alone. The boy was a hunter though, and she asked him if he has ever killed one of those “marriages.”(24).
