1984 In 1984, Winston Smith lives in London, which is part of the country Oceania. The world is divided into three countries that include the entire globe: Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. Oceania is a totalitarian society led by Big Brother, which censors everyone’s behavior, even thoughts. Winston isn’t satisfied with the quality of living and he doesn’t swallow the slogans and hate that he is meant to. He secretly wants to join the brotherhood, a group of underground rebels attempting to overthrow the government, but he doesn’t fully know that they exist. Winston begins to commit thoughtcrime, which is harboring any thought against the party. The other significant character in this plot is a woman named Julia. She is a coworker that has dealt with being a member of the inner party firsthand. What does Julia represent to Winston and what does she offer Winston that he was lacking before the affair? Winston views Julia as every woman from the beginning. “Winston had disliked her from the very moment of seeing her. (Orwell 12)” Thoughts of cold showers and community hikes were conjured when he started to think about a woman inside the party. Winston suspects something about this particular girl though. He was given the impression that this girl was more dangerous than most. To Winston this is not a good thing because she could be an amateur spy trying to get him vaporized. She wears an ambiguous sash representing the Junior Anti-Sex League tight around her waist showing the shapeliness of her hips. Winston observes that the reason for his hate towards her was from his own inability to attain a woman because every one seemed to be consumed by the party.
