KEEPING CLOSE TO HOME
The differences that were growing between a southern black girl and her small town Kentucky family separated her from them both physically and emotionally. ... This left her no choice but to travel outside the comfort of her home and family with the halfhearted support of her parents and attend school at Stanford University. Her parents were puzzled at her ambition that surpassed an all black school somewhere near home. They expected that with the support she was given she would go to a nearby college, get a job and get married, all while keeping close to home.
