DBQ: By the 1850’s the Constitution, originally framed as an instrument of national unity, had become a source of sectional discord and tension and ultimately contributed to the failure of the union it had created. During the 1850’s the Constitution, which had until that time to bring national unity to the United States, reached its downfall. A series of resolutions concerning the issue of slavery and the locations that it exited in or was desired to exist in raised a great confusion about the view of the Constitution. The reason for this is because the author failed to realize was that the Constitution is unclear on the expansion of slavery in the new territories. This issue eventually led to the failure of the union that had been created under the guardian of the Constitution. The sectional discord that resulted between the North and the South as a result of the argument of whether or not slavery would be allowed to expand into any newly- purchased United States territories ended in secession, disunion, and finally war. The uncertainty of the Constitution on the issue of slavery caused a major conflict between the North and the South, ultimately ending in secession. At the time of Compromise of 1850, the purchase of the Southwest in the Mexican War raised the question of the law of slavery in the territories.
