Nowadays, due to the growth of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca rainforest is completely surrounded by residential areas and covers an area of only 32 Km2. ... Only in 1960 the Tijuca rainforest became a national park and 1967 the name changed from Rio de Janeiro National Park to Tijuca national park, due to confusion with two other national parks (Itatiaia and Serra dos Orgãos) in the state of Rio. Today the Tijuca rainforest is jointly managed by the IBAMA and the city council, and it is severely protected by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
