Nina Sumner 13L ALL YOU NEED IS PAUL
"Im not half the man I used to be- theres a shadow hanging over me? ... "
It is difficult to pinpoint the exact origin of the Great Paul is Dead Story. ... Had Paul sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the Beatles success? OR is the real Paul McCartney six feet under and this was the way it was announced? ... But was it a day in the life of Paul? ... "Some kid from Eastern Michigan University called and asked very simply, whether the story that Paul McCartney is dead was true. ...
But the idea of Paul McCartney being secretly dead was just ludicrous. ... Not only were the Beatles dead (although the public didnt know that), but so was Paul (which the public knew all too well).
And so the story goes…
November 9th, a Wednesday morning, at five o clock as the day begins (lyrics from "Shes Leaving Home"), Paul Sped through town in his Aston Martin- furious after a row with John Lennon. ... Distracted then, for another reason, Paul didnt realise he was coming up to a red light. A gathering of people stared at the end result ("A crowd of people stood and stared, theyd seen his face before, nobody was really sure if he was from the house of Lords* (*or PAUL)"). ... All newspaper articles were quickly censored. Beatles insiders learned it was Paul, but kept silent. Paul didn’t have much family left, so there wasnt much question of keeping family leaks under control. ... Brian Epstein, their manager, appalled by such deceit- a threat to the Beatles future- mysteriously passed away soon after…
Meanwhile a Paul McCartney look-alike contest was, coincidentally, held- William Campbell being the winner. Campbell was offered an exorbitant amount of money to play Paul, rather than bask in the obvious glory of being announced as the winner. ... All except for one minor detail- they failed to fix the scar on Campbells upper lip, making him distinguishable from the "real" Paul. The "real" Paul would later claim he did this in a motorcycle accident in late 1966. ... "Rubber Soul"-release date December 3rd 1965
Paul seems to be looking up from his grave. ...
· In the song "Im Looking Through You" Paul sings "Im looking through you…You dont look different but you have changed…" and "…You were above me but not today, the only difference is youre down there…". ... Maybe Capitol Records realised it was too much of a coincidence- people may catch on…
· In the notorious cover then, Paul sits inside a trunk- symbolic of a coffin.
