History of African Dance? Dance is an expression of life. It captures the horrible, the tragic, the wonderful, and many more emotions in between. Watching a dance performance can take the spectator to another place both emotionally and spiritually. African dance brings its message through stories, theatricalized, rituals, and traditional music. It has evolved from Africa to the United States and has transformed itself into today’s modern dances. All ceremonial African dances have a purpose, they tell stories and relate history. The importance of ceremonies in an African society, an in other societies, can be seen as one moves through a typical life cycle. African dances are as varied and changing as the communities that create them. Although many types of African that incorporate masks are spirited, have vigorous movement, and there are also others that are more reserved or stylized. African dances vary widely by region and ethnic community. In addition, there are numerous dances within a given community. African communities traditionally dance for a variety of social purpose. Africans danced for many reasons, it played a role in religious rituals; including celebration of birth, initiations from childhood to adulthood and weddings.
