The Piano Lesson The Piano Lesson is a drama that plays out the struggles of an African-American family as they grapple with their heritage of slavery and their future as free citizens in a country that still does not fully accept them. Each member of the family finds their own way to deal with their lot in life but, as The Piano Lesson shows us, they don’t always agree. ... He refuses to leave and announces that he would like to sell the piano that is in Berniece’s livingroom, claiming that since it belonged to their father, half of it is his. ... Berniece believes that if Boy Willy actually gets the money for the piano, he would blow it on alcohol and loose women. Ironically, Berniece will not let Boy Willy sell the piano but she also will not play it.
