Nursing theories have a group of four concepts that are a part of their framework, also referred to as a metaparadigm. In this paper, I will discuss the following four concepts: person, environment, health, and nursing. With each concept, I will describe the concept as I view them, in my own words. In addition, I will provide a clear example from my practice for each of the concepts, and then following that I will use Mezirow’s reflective practice to give an understanding to why I described the concepts the way I did. Finally, I will determine which paradigm my thinking represents and explain why by analyzing my thoughts and descriptions of each concept discussed in this paper. Person A person is a human being that has values, morals and a cultural background unique to each individual. Who is in need of a nurse’s care, of which can be in the most intimate of positions. Each has feelings and emotions that are possibly heightened due to the compromise in their health. Which require an attentive non-judgmental, caring nurse to assist them with their medications, wound care, and other medical orders. Example. In my practice, I have a variety of patients each with different ethnic backgrounds, and with different methods of recovery. Each patient has individual pain tolerances, views of taking medications and motivations for staying healthy, just to name a few. As their nurse, I tailor my nursing practice to patients as individual’s not just patients. The ultimate goal of being discharged home with minimal care needed. Reflective practice. I feel that my limited career so far has definately been my main influence for my interpretation of the client. Obviously, my main theory of the “client” has been through my college education, but my description based on my interaction thus far in my career at the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation (HHSC), as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) on five south/west, Cardiovascular.
