1984 The story basically opens up describing a dreary country called Oceania, which is the equivalent of a mega state. The world is as described in the book to be divided into three countries Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia that are all oppressive societies. The three countries always seem to be at war with one another. The country of Oceania is littered with the ever present telescreens, they are two way televisions sets that are always on and cannot be turned off. These screens seem to give the government a faceless observation into everyone’s lives. At anytime day or night these screens send out different messages, sometimes the messages are just gibberish, and sometimes they indicate how well the war is going, these announcements of the war progress seem to happen pretty regularly, they seem give the people of Oceania a false sense that the government is looking out for their well being. Giant posters adorn the walls of building’s they depict an enormous face of Big Brother, which is what the country calls the government, these posters are strewn all over and they measure more then a meter wide in size. The town of Oceania is also reflected negatively in that the Government cuts off the electric current during the daylight. The books main character is Winston Smith, who is a member of the outer party. He is a man about forty five years old, he lives his life like the rest of the sheep in Oceania, he gets up goes to work and comes home to sleep, doing the same routine all over again next morning. Winston Smith works in one the Government or Party’s huge structures called the Ministry of Truth.
