Life is a journey, with many roads leading to different paths. Throughout the course of ones life, many decisions must be made immediately. Some of these changes may be life altering, while others leave no remarkable impact. In the story “The Advance” by Henri Lopés, Carmen, a housekeeper, encounters a very difficult decision with a life transforming result. Her actions and choices take the reader through the three stages of the rites of passage. These three stages include separation, ordeal and re-incorporation. This story displays the typical elements of a rite of passage. The first stage of the rite of passage that Carmen experiences is isolation. She begins this journey by working for a very wealthy family; taking care of their child, Francoise.
