Team dynamics is new terminology for what is the inter-workings and structure of work teams and or learning teams. In researching “team dynamics”, I searched the web, using Google Search, I searched using only the criteria, exact phrase “team dynamics”; it returned 65,700 results. There were many explanations, articles, books and an abundance of consulting firms showing just how much the phrase “team dynamics” has come to be part of the business culture. Team dynamics has come to the forefront as a viable alternative to individual progression and achievement. Using teams can have many benefits if used and managed in the proper way or can be a huge detriment if not. Society as a whole has tried to fine tune the idea of team dynamics for centuries making it a living, breathing entity for all aspects of our world, from child rearing to big business conglomerates to government. Team dynamics is not a new idea or endeavor; it just has a new name and new emphasis in today’s economic world. Team dynamics has been called many things in the past such as working together, sharing the workload, and cooperating, or as Katzenbach and Smith put it “A team is a small number of people with complimentary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” (1993) but in reality all these terms mean the same; pulling the strengths and ideas of others to find a way to work smarter not harder.
In looking back on the history of team dynamics, we could go back to the days of the caveman who worked in teams to kill larger animals for food and clothing, the team work required to build the pyramids in Egypt, the Chinese philosopher Mencius in the third century B. ... , who wrote of the advantage of division of labor, or even Plato who

wrote in “The Republic” “A man whose work is confined to such limited tasks must necessarily excel at it.” The study of team dynamics as related to the work place really began at the dawn of the industrial age with a man named Frederic Winslow Taylor. ...

Today team dynamics has become a major topic of research and concern for many major corporations such as AT&T, Bell Atlantic, Intel Corporation, and Ford Motor Company.
