Colonel? As the story progresses, the characters of the two sisters Josephine and Constantia and their late father begin to form. From the beginning it is evident that they are all victims of abhorrence and self-loathing. While the father was alive he held his two daughters on a tight rope, not only through childhood but even at adulthood. He didn’t allow them to make decisions and in turn stunted their emotional progression towards becoming adults. Years of dependence on their domineering father has sapped them of any decision-making powers. They were both like small children, unable to make a decision for themselves - Josephine couldn’t bear the thought of her father finding out she had made a decision on her own, as she had a “moment of absolute terror” while thinking what her father would have said if he found out that “she and Constantia had done this thing without asking his permission.” They had paid for their father’s indifferent and heartless militaristic approach to parenthood by never growing up – and by forever staying children.
