What is an algal bloom? An algal bloom is a rapid increase in the number of algal cells such that the algae dominate the planktonic community.
Introduction
For most of time the swan river has been contaminated with toxic algae bloom, Algae blooms are cause by an increase in nutrients to the water and increasing phosphate levels hitting the swan river. ...
The problem of algae bloom in the swan river was caused by an increase in phosphate levels mainly cause by illegal dumping, the main cause of the phosphate levels increasing was due to heavy rainfall in the metropolitan area causing the soil to run into the river and bring extra nutrients. ... During the algae bloom to levels of nutrients were 6-8 times more then usual. The bloom was due to a number of environmental conditions all being met such as fresh and warm water, sunlight and high nutrient levels. ...
The algae can be collected and sucked up using the same technology that is used for oil slicks – basically a giant aquatic vacuum cleaner. The left over algae can be disposed of carefully at a sewage treatment plant. ... Another technique used was to spray fine clay particles onto the water, this caused the algae to come together and sink because of the extra weight, the algae then sank and died due to a decrease in nutrients and light. ...

Report 2
Introduction
There are many causes of algae bloom in the swan river and they come from a numerous amount of sources such as Industries in the upper regions of the river and natural causes (heavy rainfall bringing extra nutrients into the river. The cause from these is toxic algae that has spread but decreased over time.

Aim
My aim is to research and find the sources that caused the swan river algae bloom and locate their region in relation to the algae amounts.
