The purpose of this tutorial is to explain the key concepts and terms that underpin the year 11 and 12 English course. These concepts are that writers invite readers or viewers to read the text in a certain way, that discourses (that is beliefs, values and attitudes) related to culture, gender technology etc. are conveyed through textual features, that social groups are deliberately represented in a certain way and that an alternate or resistant reading can be applied to any text. Some of the terms that will be explained in this tutorial are genre, register, textual features, discourses and positioning A text is basically anything constructed by humans and which humans can interpret. All texts reveal many things about the human who constructed it.
