“How successful have the texts you have studied been in making a social commentary? Refer to Gatsby and American beauty.”
Texts can be used as a method to communicate the values of their culture of production, and in turn, the context will impact upon the texts themselves, thus forming a social commentary. The novel The Great Gatsby and the film American beauty. Have all been very successful in making a social commentary because they all discuss the decay of the American Dream.
The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald was set in the decadent Jazz Age and portrays the 1920’s as an era of decayed social and moral values through its over-arching cynicism, greed and empty pursuit of pleasure. This resulted ultimately in the corruption of the American Dream, which states that anyone from any social background and class can accumulate great wealth and this in turn will create happiness. However in The Great Gatsby, the main character in the novel Jay Gatsby, who has worked very hard to become a very rich person, is not happy with his wealth and material possessions.
