Karin Evelyn Eng 101 The Great Gandhi In a brief history, Gandhi was born in 1869 to Hindu parents in western India. At the age of 13 he entered an arranged marriage. He was later sent to London by his family to study law. He was then admitted into the Inner Temple. He worked to improve the rights of immigrant Indians in southern Africa. There is where he developed his creed of passive resistance against injustice and was frequently jailed as a result of his protest. These recent events inspired Gandhi to devote his life to nonviolent approaches to resolve problems. In India, Gandhi took the lead in the struggle for independence from Britain. He never changed in his belief of nonviolent protest and religious tolerance.
