Like many medical students, I began my education and training unsure of which specialty I would choose for my fellowship. I had very broad clinical interests and desired a field in which I could connect with patients on a personal and professional basis. ... To this end, I applied and was accepted for a Post-Sophomore Year Fellowship in Pathology; an opportunity awarded to one medical student to provide didactic training in histologic slide interpretation and assist the clinical research staff in ongoing investigations and methodologies in patient-oriented research. ... Once again, the meticulous aspect of the lab work combined with authoritative instruction appealed to me in much the same way as my pathology fellowship. ... Given that in this day and age, medical advances have enabled physicians to prevent not just detect colon cancer, I feel a personal responsibility to teach and aid others in the prevention of this disease.
