1.0 Introduction Centuries ago, science fiction had created an image of “self-aware” robots exemplifying the beginning of artificial intelligence. Such robots such as C3PO and R2D2 are probably the most famous robots. These two gave designers and technicians goal of artificial intelligence and human looking design to strive for. Today in this age of rapid technological advancements, robots are being more commonly used to serve the purpose of simplifying our way of life. Due to this, arguments have risen on the social and ethical impacts of robots on the human race. To discover the social and ethical impacts of robots on humans, one must first derive a specific meaning of the term “robot.” 2.0 What is a “Robot”? The word “Robot” comes from the Czech word “robota,” which means “forced labor.”Î There are many varying definitions of what a “robot” actually is. A robot can be defined as “A machine that makes kinematics decisions.”Ð This basically means that a robot is a mechanical artifact that can make mechanically “move” and make decisions. This definition excludes computers with artificial intelligence to be considered a “robot.” Although most robots are serve little more function than a power tool, some robots are being created to imitate human behavior and movement. 3.0 What drives the development of robotic devices? There aqre many factors driving the development of robotic devices including, money, safety, labor and just for the sake of technological advancement and curiosity. 3.1 Money Robots have the benefit of not requiring any payment for jobs they have completed. For this reason robots have the abilty to replace workers, saving an employer wages, superannuation and other human incurred costs.
