Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night In Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night a number of characters are deluding themselves and in the end have to face reality. Discuss. In the film/play of Twelfth Night a small number of characters are presented and portrayed as being self deluded and self deceived. The characters in the film, written by William Shakespeare, have many misconceptions of themselves, the world and their relationships and achievements, turning their back to reality and the truth. The characters Malvolio, Olivia and the Duke (Orsino) are all looked upon and perceived as being self deluded. The character of Malvolio has the delusion and belief that he is of higher importance and stature then the other characters in the play. Throughout the film Malvolio’s stuck up and conceited attitude, leads him to a cruel trick being played on him by Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Maria, offering him hope to his aspirations of being loved by Olivia.
