	There was only one writer in the colonial period ,whose works are read today. This was Benjamin Franklin. He is the only good American author before the Revolutionary War. It is easy to forget ,in the glory of his public achievements, that Franklin was the first major writer. If he had never been a scientist or a statesman, he would still command respect in the field of literature. Franklin had a definite gift for writing.
