Summary and Response The Argument Culture
In the essay “The Argument Culture”, the author, also a professor of linguistics, Deborah Tannen, explains how entrenched our argument culture is today and how it affects us as a society, sometimes in useful ways, but more often creating more problems than solved. She stated that our culture is obsessed with turning every allegation into a headline, every headline into a conflict, and every conflict into a scandal. ... Tannen optimistically noted that, “it will take creativity for each of us to find ways to change the argument culture to a dialogue culture. ... With an argument, you’re either right or you’re wrong. ... I think she made a good point when she stated that listening to two sides of an argument or a debate is the wrong way to accomplish anything.
