... There has always been a gap between those people and countries who can maximize on the information technology provides and those who cannot. The term “digital divide” refers to this gap between the informed and the uninformed. A narrowed scope of the term ‘digital divide’ focuses on computers and Internet access, however the topic is much broader than just hardware and software. The idea of “bridging the digital gap” opens the world and therefore the minds of its people to technological advances beyond initial belief. ... If these vital learning tools are not improved the digital divide will persist. Bridging the digital divide has met many obstacles. ... In Jamaica, where some people are still burdened with finding adequate food, clothing, shelter, medical care and educational opportunities, bridging the digital gap is minimal. However, on the contrary bridging the digital divide will bring about communications and technological advances that may serve as crucial factors in improving the quality of life for all Jamaicans. Economic development is at the forefront of the digital divide issue. Countries that have the right tools and skills to compete in this current digital economy are at an apparent advantage over those that do not.
