Sometimes I wonder how my parents ever were teenagers. Just trying to hold an intelligent conversation with them is a major task. With the past elections, our family had many conversations not only about our future president, but also the key issues in the presidential debates. As my brother and I discussed our views on the important issues, my mother eyed us like our ideas were completely crazy. It's not that my parents don't try to understand, it's that they are not able to conceive the new ideas. This common problem is most often referred to as the generation gap. The generation gap is a continuous cycle in time. No matter what year or generation, there always is some sort of gap. A generation gap is the contrasting of ideas within two generations caused by the ongoing changes in the world. In this century we are seeing women choosing to develop a career rather than a family. Or, waiting until their career is fully engaged before starting a family. The reason for this is solely the civil rights movement. Before, woman never had a choice. Nowadays, they can have a career, or a family, or both. The women in past generations can not relate to the women of this decade. Everything that the younger generation of women are experiencing is new. The gap is the failing attempt to form communication between two groups of people who live completely different lifestyles. It is like trying to explain how to snow ski to someone who has never seen snow. Generation gaps are formed when the world around us changes. Change is something that cannot every be eliminated. Because of this fact, the generation gap is cyclical. Many people, especially the younger generation, define the generation gap as the elder generations unwillingness to accept new ideas -good or bad - moral or immoral- in the ever changing world.
