The Barbary Treaties
In the late 1700’s shipping through the Mediterranean had been affected by pirating from the North Africans. ... An initial “treaty” had been placed into service from the Washington regime on November 4th, 1796. This treaty had just allowed for monies from the United States to be paid, to allow for safe passage through the trade routes. The initial treaty had a large amount “up front” then a “payment plan” that would be required to be paid in order to keep the United States from being pirated throughout the year. ... A US commerce ship was captured, and all of the crew became slaves for the Barbary States. ...
Initially, Jefferson sent the military to Tripoli to defend the waterway and overthrow the current Barbary States government to assure safe passage through the Strait of Gibraltar. With a poor initial attack in Tripoli, and the capture of the USS Philadelphia, the military advantage was certainly for the Barbary States.
