National Company: Crisis/Ethical Behavior In a world of business there are common commitments made by companies to engrain a level of comfort with customers. One company in particular is General Electric. G.E. has a commitment to provide consumers with high-quality products while protecting health of workers and the environment. G.E. has a worldwide reputation of honesty and reliable business conduct. A commitment on making the world a better place. G.E.’s commitment is put to the test in Walla Walla Washington. The Hanford Nuclear Reservation facility is fifty miles downwind of the town. In 1964 and 1965 the reservation was assisting the U.S. military by making plutonium. June Casey was attending college and remembers loosing her hair, two babies and being advised by her physician that thyroid cancer could overcome her at any time. Tom Bailey grew up in Walla Walla where he was born and raised. He ate the food and drank the milk from his family’s farm right next to the Hanford reactors. Bailey never paid much attention to the plant. His family’s business was growing food and Hanford’s business was to make nuclear weapons. “To each his own”. Even though forty percent of his family’s animals were deformed or died. In the mid-80’s, Bailey held a survey investigation in an area near Hanford. Twenty-seven of twenty-eight families reported suffering from severe health problems. The high radiation exposure is now known as, “the death mile”. Residents of Walla Walla Williams 2 are not alone. Thousands of people have experienced similar health problems in the northwestern United States. These severe health problems began to surface in other exposed areas and the government was forced to begin revealing classified information. A mapping of the exposed areas had been drawn up to show enormous amounts of radioactive releases, some accidental others experimental, were exposed into the ground water and air.
