802.11b supports bandwidth up to 11 Mega bytes per second (Mbps) and it has a maximum operating range of 300 ft. indoors and 500 ft. in open areas. The 802.11g has about the same range than 802.11b but supports bandwidths up to 54 Mbps, which allows a faster data transmission. The range of the signal depends on both, the transmitter power and the clarity of the signal path, the lesser obstacles it has the longer range it gets. On the other hand, regular wired networks offer speeds up to 100 Mbps for less price and the range only depends on the cable length and the number of signal amplifiers. Recently, the still expensive use of optic fiber systems has increased up to 25.600 Mbps the data transmission speed and allow quite more range without loosing of signal strength. H. L.
