Imagine a world without hunger, disease, or malnutrition. Picture our planet’s fields filled with perfect crops that will keep much longer than their organic relatives, a world where weeds have become virtually extinct. ... This is a world where genetically modified (GM) food has turned out well. Now imagine a world where enhanced crops have ravaged our planet. Deadly super-germs that have become immune to pesticides spread diseases throughout the world. ... These are harvested in barren fields in poor dirt that has been destroyed by weeds and are too few to feed the world. Both of these situations are possible if genetic modification of the food we eat continues. If we abuse the power of genetic modification it could destroy the world’s natural cycles.
Currently over half the food in America’s supermarkets is genetically modified (Overview, web), yet most people do not understand the process. ... It should be noted that there are a number of ways to genetically modify an organism, but the one described is most widely used. ...
The many benefits of genetic modification have already improved the world in a number of ways. ... This is important because previous mistakes by humans have disrupted the natural cycle that controls food chains. ... Many scientists believe that GM foods will disrupt the natural cycles such as food chains and ecosystems that are essential to human survival. ... This cycle works its way up through the system, putting a serious glitch in the food chain.
One issue concerning GM food could directly affect you. ... There have been cases in which people ate GM organisms that contained a gene from an organism they were allergic to or were genetically modified using chemicals they were allergic to (GM food, web). If you have severe allergies you should be very aware of what is in your food. ... Should we genetically alter our food to better serve our needs? ... This is an important factor in another big controversy surrounding the labeling of GM food.
In my opinion, the most important question is whether or not the GM of food is even necessary. The theory that GM food will help fight world hunger is largely misunderstood. The problem that causes world hunger is not a lack of food, but an inability to get it (Genetically Engineered, web). People have access to the food, but they cannot afford it. What GM crops could possibly help with is improving the nutrition of people in need by adding nutrients to the food they can afford.
