For the two years since the spectacular collapse of Enron, federal prosecutors have sought details on exactly how the energy firm conjured its financial trickery behind the dark glass of an imposing tower in Houston. With last week's guilty plea and promise of cooperation from former Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow, the government has "a seat on the 50th floor," says Leslie Caldwell, head of the Justice Department's Enron Task Force. Fastow, as chief designer of the off-the-books deals that propped up Enron's reputation even while it foundered in debt, is uniquely positioned to testify about top executives' role in the concealment. It is widely believed Fastow can shed light on any involvement by former CEO Jeffrey Skilling but less clear if he can lead investigators to former CEO Kenneth Lay.
