A Modest Proposal-Summary In “A Modest Proposal,” author Jonathan Swift uses satire and irony to present his “solution” to the starving people of Ireland. Swift presents this situation sympathetically but sets out all of the facts and details, showing that there is a “surplus” of children who can’t be fed. He explains his plan to rid Ireland of starvation and poverty by taking 120,000 starving, dirt-poor children, and eating them. He suggests taking all of the one-year olds, all nicely fattened up from their mothers breast milk and all from parents that would not be able to support them as they get older, and making them into “a most delicious, nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked or boiled”(pg.2) from this beginning, Swift goes on to explain his scheme for breeding children for consumption.
