... However, the idea of gene therapy- that human disease might be treated by transfer of genetic material into the actual cells of the organism has yet to make its mark in medicine. Nevertheless, gene therapy is a stimulating topic in biology and medicine, and its substantial progress combined with its overwhelming benefits, makes it one of the greatest ideas in biology.
Quite simply put, gene therapy is a method for “correcting” abnormal genes responsible for certain diseases. Experimentation in gene therapy began September 14, 1990, when scientists at the U.S National Institute of Health executed the first approved gene therapy test on a four-year-old child named Ashanti Desilva.
