Purpose
This study was conducted to determine the health status and health resources for homeless women and children in a midwestern rural community.
Research Questions
What is the health status of rural women housed in a shelter for homeless women in a Midwestern state, including dental status, substance use, mental health and adverse life events?
What is the health status of the children of rural homeless women?
What are the health resources for health promotion and illness management for rural homeless women?
Research Design
Interview data were collected from a convenience sample in a natural setting. Characteristics of rural homeless women and children studied were their health status and their health resources, including adverse life experiences.
Sample Group
A shelter for homeless women was selected as the setting for this study. Data was collected from 31 rural homeless women. The women in the study had been raised on farms or in small towns and had moved to the town with the shelter to find work. ... The interview contained 8 sections
