Kramer vs. Kramer focuses on the traditional roles that Joanna and Ted Kramer were socialized into. Joanna Kramer, married to Ted for 8 years, realizes that she was socialized into a role that didn’t satisfy her. At one point of the movie, she says “I always played the role of a wife, mother, and daughter.” As soon as she was married, she quit the job that she had so that she could raise her son. She would do all the cooking, cleaning, budget, shopping, laundry, and responsibilities of the household. Ted, on the other hand, was socialized into the traditional male role. He had to “bring home the bacon.” He was the father, the husband, the breadwinner. His responsibility was to provide for his family, and his main priority was work. These roles forced upon both Ted and Joanna caused their relationship to crumble, which in affect was conflicted. Joanna realized that she was unhappy due to the roles that were placed upon her. She felt that her concerns and unhappiness, although voiced, was not heard by Ted. After awhile, she felt that something was wrong inside her, she had no self-esteem, and that their son, Billy, would be better without her. “I wanted a chance to search myself,” she states.
